Why We Should Keep Our Freeways Free of Advertising

Scenic America, a national organization fighting the uncontrolled proliferation of outdoor advertising, has issued a position paper outlining in detail all the reasons, legal and otherwise, why California should not allow advertising on freeway “amber alert” message boards and in right-of-ways as “vegetative” corporate logos.  Much of it details why this commercial advertising would violate both the letter and spirit of federal law, including the 1965 Highway Beautification Act.  Please read it, then send a message to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger telling him that you want our freeways and  highways kept free of this commercialization of public space.
